Homestuck (2009)

It all started when I was shown a post on Tumblr about some Minecraft mod called Minestuck, a mod about a fictional game called Sburb from a webcomic called Homestuck. Since my exposure, I fell into this weird once-in-a-lifetime rabbit hole and I'm as confused about it now as when I first started googling it, just WHAT IS IT!?

You could jump into it with no explanations here, if you don't care enough then you could read about it more in-depth on these pages:

  1. Wikipedia - Homestuck
  2. Observer - A Noob’s Guide to Homestuck, the Favorite Webcomic of Internetty Teens Everywhere
  3. MS Paint Adventures - What is Homestuck?
  4. Fandom - MS Paint Wiki

From what I could gather, it's a webcomic, where a boy in 2009 is playing a fictional game (that determines the fate of Earth) with his friends and aliens called Trolls. While I know I got details in the previous sentence wrong, it's not really what fascinated me.

I'm more fascinated about how I didn't read or hear about it in the first place! I'm more interested in finding out about deferent cultures and fandoms on the internet as a whole but, this particular one is interesting in a sense that I still don't really know what is it about, I've read the first couple panels but since I'm lazy and pretty much lost interest quickly I skipped ahead. Good lord there are more than 8000 panels in this thing! from pictures to gifs and full blown animations and music! When I say music I mean something like.. a lot of music.

They did get a videogame from a Kickstarter a while back dubbed Hiveswap and it is on Steam.

Personally the whole thing is not for me but, I wanted to document it for my sake, just to remember that something as huge as this can be simply obscured and hidden from everyone else who wasn't there to bear witness to it's inception and followed it's fandom while it was ongoing.
